Chimney Cleaning: what to know

Every wood fire leaves a residue on the inside of the flue. Creosote starts as a flaky soot and, with enough buildup and repeated heating, hardens into a glossy tar that burns at very high temperatures if it ignites. Chimney fires are usually creosote fires. Gas and oil appliances do not produce creosote, but their flues still collect soot, acidic deposits, rust flakes and whatever falls in from the top.

Asset Roofing & Chimney cleans fireplace and appliance flues across North New Jersey. We sweep from the top or bottom depending on the chimney, using brushes sized to the flue and rods that reach its full length, with the hearth sealed and a vacuum running so soot stays out of the room. Along the way we clear nests and debris, check the damper and smoke chamber, and note anything that looks like it needs repair.

If you burn wood regularly, plan on a cleaning at least once a year and more often with heavy use or if you burn unseasoned wood. Schedule it in late summer or early fall, before the rush. If you smell smoke in the house, hear flapping in the flue, or see black flakes falling into the firebox, do not wait for the season to start.

Common Problems

Signs you may need chimney cleaning

Creosote buildup

Black, flaky or shiny deposits on the flue walls and the back of the damper are creosote. Even a thin layer is fuel for a chimney fire. Burning wet wood, smoldering fires and restricted air all speed up buildup. Regular sweeping keeps it from reaching a dangerous thickness.

Smoke in the house

A fireplace that used to draw well and now sends smoke into the room often has a partially blocked flue. Creosote, a nest or fallen debris narrows the opening until the draft cannot carry the smoke. Cleaning restores the full flue diameter.

Animals and nests

Birds, squirrels and raccoons nest in uncapped flues, usually on the smoke shelf or at an offset. Nesting material is dry, flammable and blocks airflow. We remove it as part of the sweep and recommend a cap to keep it from happening again.

Odors from the fireplace

A sour, smoky smell on humid days comes from creosote and soot absorbing moisture. Dead animals produce a different and unmistakable odor. In both cases, cleaning the flue and smoke chamber is the fix, often together with a cap and a look at where the water is coming from.

Debris in the firebox

Flakes of creosote, bits of clay tile, mortar crumbs or roofing grit in the firebox mean material is coming loose above. Creosote flakes call for a sweep. Tile or mortar fragments call for an inspection of the liner, which we can do during the same visit.

Our Process

How chimney cleaning works with Asset

  1. 01

    Protect the room

Drop cloths go down, the fireplace opening is sealed, and a vacuum runs throughout so soot and dust stay in the chimney and out of your living space.

  2. 02

    Sweep the flue

Brushes matched to the flue size are run the full length of the chimney, breaking creosote and soot loose. The smoke chamber and shelf are cleaned by hand, since brushes cannot reach their shape.

  3. 03

    Check and report

With the flue clean we can see the liner and damper clearly. We tell you what we found, whether it is in good order or something, like cracked tiles or heavy glazed creosote, needs attention.

FAQ

Chimney Cleaning questions, answered

How often should a chimney be cleaned?

The usual guidance is once a year for a fireplace that is used regularly, with an inspection at the same time. Heavy users, wood stove owners and anyone burning softwood or unseasoned wood may need it more than once a season. Gas and oil appliance flues need less frequent sweeping but should still be checked yearly.

How do I know if there is creosote in my chimney?

Open the damper and shine a flashlight up the flue. Black flaky or crusty deposits on the walls are creosote. If you can scrape a layer more than about an eighth of an inch thick with a fireplace poker, the chimney is overdue. Glossy, tar-like creosote is the most dangerous form and the hardest to remove.

Is chimney cleaning messy?

It should not be. We seal the fireplace opening, lay drop cloths and run a vacuum during the whole sweep. The soot comes out into our equipment, not onto your furniture. Occasionally a fireplace with an unusual configuration requires more care, and we discuss that before starting.

Can you clean a chimney that serves a furnace or water heater?

Yes. Oil-fired appliances in particular leave soot and acidic deposits that erode flue tile and restrict draft. Gas appliance flues collect less but can hold rust flakes, nests and debris. We clean these flues and, if the appliance is being replaced, can address liner sizing at the same time.

What affects the price of a chimney cleaning?

The number of flues, the height and configuration of the chimney, how heavy the buildup is, and whether glazed creosote requires extra treatment. Removing a nest or animal debris adds time. We quote the sweep when you call and let you know up front if we expect anything unusual.

Do you inspect the chimney when you clean it?

Every sweep includes a visual check of what we can see from the firebox and the top of the flue, and we report any damage or concerns. For a more complete evaluation, such as before buying a home or after a chimney fire, we recommend a dedicated inspection, which can be scheduled together with the cleaning.
