Roof Replacement for Bogota homes and buildings
A roof replacement on one of Bogota's early twentieth-century houses is mostly about what is under the shingles. We remove every existing layer, inspect the board sheathing, replace any rotted planks and, where the gaps are wide, overlay the deck so the new shingles have a solid nailing surface. Then we install ice-and-water barrier at eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment, architectural shingles and new flashing throughout.
Porch roofs and dormers are part of the job. Low-slope porch roofs usually need a membrane rather than shingles, and the junction with the house wall needs new flashing tied into the main roof. On two-families and storefront buildings with flat roofs, replacement means removing old built-up layers and installing a modern membrane system.
Permits are typically required for a full replacement; check with the borough's building department, and we can advise on what is usually needed. With houses close together on narrow lots, we plan debris removal and protect neighboring property carefully.
Bogota housing
Bogota is a compact, mostly residential borough developed largely in the first half of the twentieth century. Frame single-family houses from the early 1900s through the 1930s, including foursquares, colonials and gabled homes with front porches, sit on narrow lots alongside two-family houses. Later infill added some capes and ranches. The commercial district has older one- and two-story buildings with flat roofs, and there are a few apartment buildings.
Weather & exposure
The borough sits along the Hackensack River, and the lower blocks near the water are subject to river humidity and, in places, flooding during heavy storms. Mature street trees shade many roofs and fill gutters each fall. Houses close together mean roofs and gutters often drain toward a neighbor's wall or a narrow side yard, and old brick chimneys take a steady beating from freeze-thaw.
When replacement is the right call in Bogota
A Bogota roof is due for replacement when shingles are brittle or curling across the roof, there are two or more layers, or leaks keep appearing. On houses this age, replacement is also the chance to correct deck problems that have been hidden for decades.
Architectural asphalt shingles are the usual choice for the borough's pitched roofs, and modern single-ply or modified bitumen for flat sections. Estimates are free and include photos of the existing roof.
