Chimney Repair for Weehawken chimneys
Weehawken's older homes and rowhouses have brick chimneys that rise above flat roofs or through pitched and mansard roofs, many built for coal and now venting gas appliances or unused. On the cliff edge, the east faces of these chimneys take wind-driven rain off the Hudson, and their tops, crowns and caps are often the most weathered masonry on the building.
We inspect, repoint, rebuild, reline and cap chimneys in Weehawken, flash them properly into membrane and shingle roofs, and seal or remove chimneys that are no longer needed.
Weehawken housing
Weehawken's uplands have a mix of brick and frame rowhouses with flat roofs and cornices, two- and three-family frame houses, some older detached houses with pitched or mansard-style roofs, and small apartment buildings. Many homes along the cliff edge have been renovated with roof decks and large skylights to take advantage of the view. The waterfront below the cliffs is newer construction with association-managed roofs.
Weather & exposure
Buildings along the Palisades edge in Weehawken face east over open water, so storm winds coming across the Hudson hit them with no shelter at all. Cornices, coping, chimney tops and roof decks take the brunt. Rain driven horizontally finds weak points in front walls and parapets that ordinary rain never reaches. Flat roofs pond when drains clog, and freeze-thaw works on masonry every winter.
Repair, repoint or rebuild in Weehawken
Inspection comes first, including the flue if the chimney is in use. We then repoint, rebuild the top courses, install a new crown and stainless cap, reflash at the roof line, reline, or remove, depending on what the chimney needs.
If a roof or deck project is planned, complete the chimney work first so new flashing goes into sound masonry and debris does not land on a new roof.
