Roof Replacement for Cedar Grove homes and buildings
Many Cedar Grove homes built in the 1950s and 1960s are on roofs installed a generation ago, and those roofs are wearing out now. Replacement is the point where the recurring problems of a post-war house, including shallow garage roofs, weak ventilation and wind-prone edges, can be solved rather than patched.
We tear off to the deck, repair damaged sheathing and install architectural asphalt shingles on sloped roofs and single-ply membrane on low-slope and flat sections. On exposed homes we specify high-wind-rated shingles with enhanced nailing, sealed starter courses and quality ridge caps. On shaded lots we extend ice and water protection beyond the minimum.
We also replace roofs on townhouse buildings and commercial properties. For associations, we can plan phased replacement by building and provide written scopes and photos for the board.
Cedar Grove housing
Cedar Grove is largely a post-war township. Ranches, split-levels, bi-levels, capes and center-hall colonials from the 1950s and 1960s make up most of the housing, typically with brick chimneys serving a fireplace and a furnace. Newer townhouse and condominium communities have long, connected roofs with many units under one system. Commercial and light industrial buildings along Route 23 have flat roofs.
Weather & exposure
Homes on the upper streets toward the First Watchung ridge sit higher and take more westerly wind than those lower in the valley, and wooded slopes near Mills Reservation put mature trees over many roofs. That combination means wind-lifted shingles on exposed homes, branch and debris damage after storms and shaded north slopes where snow lingers and ice dams form.
When replacement is the right call in Cedar Grove
Replace when shingles are curling, cracking or losing granules across the roof, when wind losses repeat or when leaks appear in more than one place. If the chimney needs a crown or repointing, or you want skylights added or replaced, do it with the roof.
If you are on a heavily wooded lot, consider trimming overhanging limbs before or after replacement and choosing algae-resistant shingles. A new roof lasts longer when it dries between rains and is not constantly covered in debris.
